A chicken plucker really takes any hassle out of backyard chicken (or other fowl) processing. Plucking a chicken by hand is, of course, doable, but it’s super messy and will take you at least 30 minutes to finish. But with an automatic chicken plucker, you avoid all the mess, and you save time too!

Question: How does a chicken plucker machine work?

Answer: As you turn the machine plucker ‘ON’, the base of the machine, where the rubber fingers are, starts to rotate. The rubber fingers are responsible for plucking the feathers off of the chicken. The rotation speed of the machine is adjustable through the belt nut found underneath the machine.

 

Question: What should I do before I place the chicken on the plucker machine?

Answer: Heat the water you are going to use to scald the chicken. The temperature of the water should be between 145-155 degrees Fahrenheit. Dunk the dead chicken cautiously in hot water.

 Pro Tip: Make sure that the chicken has been properly bled to prevent bruising when placed on the plucker machine.

Question: What are the steps in plucking a chicken?

Answer: You simply turn ON the machine, place the scalded chicken head down, and spray water on the chicken as it rotates on the machine. We recommend that you spray cold water as the cold water mixed with the hot (scalded) chicken allows easy removal of the feathers. Then, turn off the machine before grabbing the de-feathered chicken. The entire process should not take more than 15-25 seconds.

 Pro Tip: Place the chicken plucker machine on a flat surface and make sure to apply the stopper on the wheels to prevent your plucker from rolling during operation.

Answer: Yes, it is possible. However, scalding the chicken first at a hot bath makes the job of plucking a breeze.

 

Question: Can you use a chicken plucker for quail?

Answer: Yes, the chicken plucker machine is great for chickens, Bantam chickens, turkey, Guinea Fowl, quail, game birds, ducks, and geese.

 

Question: Can the chicken plucker pluck the feathers off of the ducks and geese properly?

Answer: These two types of birds don’t machine-pluck easily because of their downy feathers. To get better machine-plucked results, increase the scalding temperature to around 160 degrees Fahrenheit and submerge the bird on the scalding water at least three times or until its wing feathers come off easily.
